In the Beginning:

Founded on April 16, 1984, by Blessed Teresa of Calcutta and Fr. Sebastian Vazhakala, M.C., the Lay Missionaries of Charity (LMC) is an International Association of Lay people who adhere to the Spirit and Charism of the Missionaries of Charity by caring for the poorest of the poor.

The Spirit of the Lay Missionaries of Charity:

Is one of total abandonment to God's holy will, child-like trust in His Fatherly care and readiness for service in profound humility after the example of Jesus, Mary and Joseph.

The Aim of the Lay Missionaries of Charity:

Is to quench the infinite thirst of Jesus on the Cross for the love of souls, by means of the annual profession for the four private vows according to the Statutes.

The Special Mission of the Lay Missionaries of Charity:

Is to work for the salvation and santification of the members of their own families and of the poorest of the poor of the whole world.  Whole-hearted and free service to the pooresst of the poor includes both spiritual works of mercy and corporal works of mercy.

  • The spiritual works of mercy include:
    • To call sinners to repentance
    • To instruct the ignorant
    • To counsel the doubtful
    • To comfort the sorrowful
    • To bear wrongs patiently
    • To forgive injuries
    • To pray for the living and the dead
  • The corporal work of mercy include:
    • To feed the hungry
    • To give drink to the thirsty
    • To clothe the naked
    • To give shelter to the homeless
    • To visit the infirm
    • To visit the imprisoned
    • To bury the dead

Formation and Monthly Meetings

Formation is a two year discernment process that invovles studying the LMC statues, as well as reading and discussing the letters from Fr. Sebastian Vazhakala, M.C..  At the end of the two-year period, vows are professed annually and formation continues.

LMC groups meet monthly for prayer, formation lessons, and to live out their committment of service to the poorest of the poor.
